NATURAL WAY
After many requests from previous buyers and friends I have decided to add this page to help all
new and prior owners to have a healthy, happy pug. I have to charge a small fee (sorry!) since I
have spent many hours in the making of this. I will be adding new stuff from time to time as this is
a learning experience that never seems to end.

GENERAL INFO
Pugs are very social creatures who seem to be happiest in your lap. Most books will tell you they
do not require a lot of exercise, but I have found that all of mine love to go for walks, swim in their
pools, and oh yes, please can we go for a ride?!! Of course you NEVER want to overheat a pug,
and must always have available LOTS of fresh water. Since they are such social creatures, they
do much better emotionally if they have a buddy, whether it be another dog, cat or preferably
another pug. If you want a dog who lays at your feet or on his pillow, pugs are not the breed for
you. I have many pictures of me with as many pugs as possible laying on every square available
inch.

EYES

We have found cod liver oil to be the absolute best treatment for eye scratches and infections.
We had a 4 week old puppy who got her eye scratched and we used every prescription ointment
available with not much luck. I used one drop of CLO every 4 hours and in 24 hours the swelling
was almost down to normal. Her eye was to the point that it looked like it was going to pop out of
her head! I always put CLO in the puppies eyes when they first start to open for the first few days.

SKIN AND FUR

Dry, itchy skin can be caused by a multitude of factors, poor quality dog food, environmental
factors such as low humidity, allergies and stress. Of course females who have a litter of puppies
will naturally lose some hair and go through a  - my coat looks terrible!! phase.  I have found that
giving everyone 1/2 tsp. wheat germ oil daily on their food helps tremendously.  I also feed a
natural health supplement called Healthy Powder.
Recipe
1 cup Lecithin Granules
1/4 cup Norwegian Kelp
1 3/4 tsp eggshell powder
1000 mg Vit. C (crushed in an herb grinder or mortal and pestle) Mix all ingredients together and
refrigerate.
1 to 2 tsps. a day for small dogs
2 to 3 tsps. a day for medium size dogs.
1 to 2 tbsps. a day for large dogs.

Lecithin granules can be found at most herb shops, as can Norwegian Kelp and the Vitamin C.
Eggshell powder is easy to make - keep your eggshells in the freezer until you have enough for a
good batch - a gallon size freezer bag is about the right amount. Thaw then lay eggshells out on
a flat tray, bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes, then use an herb/coffee grinder and grind very
fine.
Lecithin helps your pet emulsify and absorb fats, improving the condition of his coat and
digestion. Kelp is for iodine, trace minerals, and calcium. (needed especially if your animal
exhibits problems of hip dysplasia or the breed itself is prone to it.) Vitamin C is an all-around
immune booster. (We would all benefit from it!) Eggshell powder has lots of calcium - very
important for breeding females, helps produce lots of milk.

                   FLEAS

We all hate these nasty little critters, as they make our pets (and us) miserable. Keeping your
pet's health at an optimum level is a great start to discouraging fleas. If you do get infested you
MUST treat everything, house, yard, pet quarters and pet. Lime on your yard works great, Borax
in your home is the best treatment naturally, and a lemon dip for your pet will take care of the
rest. Get powdered lime from nurseries or feed stores, sprinkle liberally on your entire yard - it
sucks all the moisture out of the fleas and they can't live. Vacuum your entire house, put Borax in
the vacuum cleaner to kill the fleas eggs you suck up, then liberally sprinkle Borax through your
entire house (it is just powdered soap), leave on for 3 days. Vacuum thoroughly again and
retreat again for three days. The life cycle of the flea is 3 days long from egg to hatch stage.
Lemon dip for your pet - Slice a whole lemon, including peel, add one pint of near-boiling water
and let it steep overnight. Sponge onto your pet's skin the next day. This is a general skin-toner,
parasite repellent and treatment for mange. Wash your pets bedding once a week in hot, soapy
water. Heat and soap will kill fleas, fortunately. We also steam clean all our carpets at the
beginning of flea season, then once a month there after. Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled
along walls, under furniture and other places your vacuum can't reach, also dries out fleas and
their larvae.

                   STOOL-EATING!!!

After trying many different things, NO! had absolutely no effect, some of the products on the
market for it never worked, we finally found that sprinkling Accent flavor enhancer (be sure you
get the kind with MSG in it, for whatever reason works. It makes the pooh tastes bad - although
we can hardly imagine how it tasted good to them in the first place.!!!!

                    BAD BREATH

Bad breath in your dog is one of the most common complaints we have heard from owners.
Do you know why restaurants always serve a sprig of parsley on the side? It is not just for looks!!
Give your dog one capsule of parsley a day and you will soon have fresh breath, works on
humans, too!! If a capsule is too large simply sprinkle it on their food. You can also give any
medicine much easier by dipping it into (wheat germ, cod liver, coconut or any other palatable oil.
It makes the pill or capsule slide right down!! Of course all dogs benefit from chewing on rawhide
bones, the dental greenies are great, although ours fight over them.  We like the green Dingo
Dental Stix. If you will notice, all of the greenie products have some form of parsley in them.

                   Dr. Marvin Shipman
                   Ozark Herb & Spice

Marvin is a naturopathic  physician my husband and I have gone to for many years. He uses
muscle-testing to discover what your body needs in the way of herbs to heal. I finally figured out
that since I have such a connection with all my pugs that we could use the same method to
discover what herbs they might need. I had a female who had not come into heat for about 10
months. Marvin tested her, found what herb she needed, she was on it for two weeks and came
into heat. Has had beautiful litters ever since. We have used many different herbal formulas to
cure my pugs of all sorts of different disorders. I much prefer using herbs over antibiotics or other
prescription medications with nasty side effects. His website is www.ozarkherbandspice.com. He
charges $5.00 per phone call, plus the cost of the herbs. I urge you to contact him with any
problem you have with your pet or any family member. My husband comes from a medical family
and now we only go to doctors if we need sewed up or a broken bone set!!

UPSET TUMMIES  - From time to time your pet may have an upset tummy from eating whatever
or some of my girls will get one around their heat time. Purchase some ginger capsules from your
health food store and give them one. This works on humans too!!

KEEP CHECKING BACK - I WILL
